Over 1800 scientists, engineers, researchers, medical physicists and students with an interest in radiation detectors and related technologies, recently came together for the leading IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference.
Hosted across Manchester Central’s iconic Central Hall and Exchange Suite attendees spent five days learning about exciting developments and new directions which are emerging in many areas of the field.
The main focus of the conference was to deliver innovative presentations, complemented by a programme of poster sessions, providing delegates with the opportunity to discuss their work with other researchers in the field.
The programme also included plenary speaker sessions, educational courses and specialist workshops on hot topics, as well as a large exhibition. This year’s event was particularly special in the fact it was also host to the 26th International Symposium on Room-Temperature X-Ray and Gamma-Ray Detectors, bringing together one of the largest collections of detector scientists and experts in the world.
Cinzia Da Via, IEEE NSS-MIC Local Host explains why they chose Manchester Central:
“IEEE NSS-MIC is usually hosted in the USA with a break every two years to a destination outside of America. This year was the first time we were hosting in the UK and the bid process for a UK venue began around six years ago. After several visits to the UK and a number of committee meetings, the final vote was to host the event in Manchester.
“Everything about Manchester Central was absolutely spectacular. We were really impressed with the location of the venue, the flexible spaces it has to offer and the friendly, welcoming nature of all the staff. The venue is in the heart of the city and in short walking distance from some great, bars, restaurants and shops – this was perfect for delegates to venture off into the city during their free time!
Cinzia went on to describe her experience in dealing with the venue team and her favourite thing about Manchester Central:
“The team were so friendly and accommodating and were great in making sure that they were on hand to provide help and support whenever we needed it. We didn’t experience any problems, but it was great to know that they were by our side to solve any issues together, should we have needed them.
“Manchester Central is truly unique! We were particularly impressed with the amount of natural daylight which came through into the space where we presented the posters. The vibrant and open space was such a breath of fresh air, as usually these types of events take place in dark and dingy rooms underground. This worked perfectly and was really appreciated by our delegates who were spending long days and evenings at the venue.
“We have had continuous positive feedback from delegates about how the venue exceeded their expectations. They came to Manchester expecting a rainy city in the North West of England and came away loving all the venue and the city have to offer!”
